Community comes together to celebrate Eid

Families from GHA’s Kingsway flats organised a picnic celebration for the community to celebrate Eid.

Children celebrate Eid at Kingsway

Every year, Muslims across the world gather to celebrate Eid as the month-long fasting of Ramadan comes to a close.

GHA tenant Maryam Hizam worked with Sue Smith, GHA’s new Community Engagement Officer, to organise the celebration in the north west of the city.

Maryam said: “It’s a great event and the sun was out. It shows that Kingsway knows how to celebrate Eid.

“All the mums came down to sit in the sun. We had food and music and lots of activities for the children.”

Sue organised posters, leaflets, snacks for the children, face painting and henna body art. She said: “The Community Engagement Officers are getting out into their communities, really listening to customers. Maryam told me she wanted to hold an Eid picnic here at the flats and we were only too happy to help.”

Glasgow charity PEEK provided three of their Play Rangers to organise fun events for the children. They made the most of the blustery weather, playing with a parachute and building makeshift tents. The day was also supported by the G15 project and Heart of Scotstoun Community Centre.

GHA Locality Director Peter Smith said: “These events help us to integrate different cultures and get residents meeting and talking to each other. It helps break down barriers and misconceptions.”
